Florida Bail Bond Scams: How to Protect Your Family

A St. Augustine bail bonds agent explains the phone scam targeting Florida families and the three checks that stop it cold.

Bail Bond Scams Are Targeting Florida Families. Here's How to Spot One.

I'm Shea Candella. I run SheaBails LLC, a bail bonds agency in St. Augustine, and I need your family to hear this before the phone rings because when it does, it will sound terrifyingly real.

The scam works like this. You get a call sometimes it even looks like it's coming from a courthouse or sheriff's office number. The caller says your son, daughter, or grandchild has been arrested. They use the real name. They may know the real jail. Then comes the pressure: bail must be paid right now, and it has to be paid by wire transfer, gift cards, Bitcoin, or a payment app and whatever you do, don't call anyone else, because the "judge" has issued a gag order, or the offer expires in twenty minutes.

Every word of that is a lie, and it is costing Florida families thousands of dollars.

Three things that are NEVER true:

  1. Law enforcement and courts never call you to demand bail money. Not the sheriff, not the clerk, not a "federal agent." Bail is handled in person, through a licensed bondsman or at the jail never over the phone under a deadline.
  2. No legitimate bail payment is ever made by gift card, Bitcoin, or wire to a stranger. Scammers demand these because the money cannot be recovered. A real bondsman gives you paperwork, a receipt, and a license number you can check.
  3. There is no such thing as a secret bail deal that expires in twenty minutes. That urgency is the weapon. A real arrest doesn't come with a countdown clock.

What to do if the call comes:

  1. Hang up. Don't argue, don't confirm any names or information hang up.
  2. Check for yourself. Look up the jail's inmate search directly (in St. Johns County, the Sheriff's Office inmate search is public) or call the jail on its published number. If your loved one isn't in custody, there is no bail to pay.
  3. Verify the bondsman. Every Florida bail bond agent is licensed by the Florida Department of Financial Services, and you can confirm a license on the DFS website before you pay anyone anything. My license is public: Shea Candella, Florida License #W472799, SheaBails LLC, Agency License #B000694.
  4. Call a local agent you chose not one who chose you. My number is (904) 417-8196, it's answered 24/7, and I will tell you honestly whether there's even a bond to post.
  5. If you've already sent money, call your bank immediately and report it to your local sheriff's office fast reports give you the best chance of stopping the transfer, and your report helps protect the next family.

Scammers are counting on panic. Slow down, verify, and call someone you can look in the eye. That's how my office works, every day.
